2018 KOICA-UNESCAP-KRIHS Capacity Building on Spatial Data and Technologies

From October 29(Mon) to November 10(Sat), the Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), Korea International Cooperation Agency(KOICA), and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific(UN-ESCAP) co-hosted 2018 KOICA-UNESCAP Capacity building on spatial data and technologies for urban planning and disaster management, which is the second year of the invitational training program. It is aimed to share Korea’s knowledge and experiences on urban disaster prevention and management, disaster information sharing platform and prediction technology and GIS application for sustainable urban development.


The participants are 19 government officials, who are in charge of disaster management and spatial technologies in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In this program, 19 trainees are from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of Innovative Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan and other relevant organizations and lecturers and staff from KRIHS and universities. The program includes lectures, advisor meeting, site visits on urban development and disaster management and cultural experiences on weekends.


The opening ceremony was held at Courtyard Marriott Seoul Namdaemun on the 31st of October with warm welcoming remarks made by the president of KRIHS, Kang Hyun Soo. He stated that Korea’s urban disaster management policy and disaster prediction and reduction technologies could be delivered and applied to participant countries’ policy establishment and implementation. Also he closed the remarks by saying that this program would build strong foundation for continuous cooperation between KRIHS, UNESCAP and Central Asian countries. The senior research fellow, Sakong Hosang suggested that each country could cooperate with KRIHS in various ways including expert consultation. It is expected that this training program could be a good opportunity to develop capacity building measures on spatial technologies and establish network between Korea and participant countries.
